Hi bro. May I ask you a question? Can you let me know who this " dragon fly boy " is? Ive seen his statue at shops but have got no idea what so ever but seems rather interesting. He has wings, wears some sort of hat or head piece, has one of his legs folded up like a cross form and his hands are both holding on to a lotus like sort of flower. Would you have any images based on him? Would be much apreciated if you could let me know who this deity or price is. Thanks in advance. Kim.

So the green joss paper that is the passport for spirits, is that burnt only for ghosts or can it be used to honour ancestors as well? Also there is another joss paper that I am not sure about. It is red in colour and has Chinese writing and pictures of Chinese officials on it, all written in gold. There is a long Chinese sentence at the top of the paper, while in between the pictures of the officials are chinese characters written verically surrounded by dragons. Inside this red paper, which is folded vertically is some kind of yellow charm with a picture of 2 men and between it is a horse. There are also talismans written on it and a circular talisman at the top. I believe this type of paper is called "gui ren joss paper", but im not sure what this joss paper is specific for. Also what is this talisman in between this joss paper? are we supposed to keep this or burn it with the paper? Thank you Vabien for addressing my questions, I can't seem to reach Jave Wu, whom I have had him answer my questions. I enjoy your website, I really like your pictures of Chinese festivals and gods. Here in Canada we dont have much Chinese spiritual supplies, only standard limited items sold here, but as a third generation Chinese Canadian, I continue to honour my culture and heritage, so I still keep celebrating the traditional holidays and honouring ancestors every year, which I enjoy and keep that tradition.

Hi edmontondragon,

No problem. The first type of paper are burnt for spirits, they represent passports to other places or realms which is popularly burnt during the 7th Lunar Month.

The second one would be used when honouring deities, especially the tiger deity, the officials on the horses are to represent benefactors quickly arriving to assist oneself.

The third one is actually quite similar to the second one, this horse in green is called "Lu Ma" which translate to Prosperity Horse. So by using this paper we hope that we will be blessed with prosperity.

I have a question about certain joss papers that I purchased from my Chinatown and I was wondering what their functions are, since I can't read Chinese. One of them is a small white paper with Chinese characters written in green that I think is for ghosts. I has a picture of a Chinese official with a fan and an assistant holding a long banner. In the center of the paper has the Chinese character for ghost written 4 times and on the left of the paper has the picture of 3 Chinese coins at the top and 2 tailsmans at the bottom.

Another joss paper are 2 small papers. One is red that has 6 Chinese officials wearing traditional hats and holding scepters riding on a horse. And Chinese characters at the top, left and right of the paper. Another one is green that has a picture of a horse and in front of the horse is a Chinese coin. Chinese characters are also written around the horse. I have pictures of these joss papers on my website, if u do not know what ones I am referring to. Please message me back for your answers, thank you.
